Tips On Preventing A Silverfish Infestation

Albia, IA (April 4, 2024) – There are many pests that make their presence known, or at least, are easier to identify than others. Enter the silverfish. This creepy crawler likes to hide from humans and while it doesn’t pose a large threat to human health, it can cause damage that may go largely unnoticed. In the following article, our Kness Pest Defense experts dive into things you should know about this pest.

What is a silverfish?

The silverfish is a species of insect that is small in size and is wingless. This pest’s name derives from its silvery light gray color along with the fish-like appearance of its movements.

Where do silverfish live?

They are most commonly found in damp places throughout the United States. Attics, basements, sinks/bathtubs, and garages are where they tend to reside, hiding from humans as much as possible.

Why should I be concerned about silverfish?

While silverfish don’t bite or spread disease to humans, they can damage our belongings. Silverfish are known to infest various paper-related items such as wallpaper, books, and envelopes. These bugs also feed on

  • Clothing
  • Cardboard
  • Glue
  • Cereal
  • Flour
  • Dried meat
  • Rolled oats
  • Dead insects

How do I prevent or eliminate a silverfish infestation?

A thorough investigation of the silverfish’s preferred habitat or areas is a great place to start. Check through books and magazines to look for signs of damage and consider storing loose magazines and other paper items in hard plastic storage containers - and the same for certain food items.

Additional control measures include

  • Utilize a dehumidifier in your home/potential problem areas
  • Repair any leaky pipes or drains
  • Get rid of or repair any wet or moldy wood
  • Schedule a licensed pest control professional to properly inspect your home

Since silverfish are attracted to and eat glue, implementing insect glue traps, like the Kness Stick-All® Glue Trap may help eliminate the problem. Stick-All Glue Traps are convenient to use and safe for the environment. Trapping other bugs can also help attract silverfish, which also feed on other dead insects.
